Please read my FAQ before sending me a question.

I'm a college student and a dancer, and I'm working to lose weight, gain muscle, become more fit... and help others do the same!

My Ask Box is always open to questions, suggestions, or if you just need to talk. If you'd like something to be answered privately, just let me know in the message. (Note: anonymous questions cannot be answered privately.)

I track the "backonpointe" tag!
“SO, I've never danced before but I want to at least learn basics for auditions (musical theatre.) What would you suggest to me, a college student, to do without taking lessons? Is there anything online or something that could help/teach me??”

First, find out what you’ll need to know for the auditions. It’ll probably be some ballet, some modern, and jazz dance. If you can find a studio (or two) in the area, see if they have student discounts, because nothing beats an actual class.

Through a quick search, I found these videos on jazz dance, though I haven’t watched them. There’s also a really great book, The Joffrey Ballet School’s Ballet-Fit, that runs through exercises and movements for basic ballet, and the book is written for people without dance experience.

Basically, browse through YouTube. A lot. Look into cheap classes in the area. Watch musicals (both for the screen and the stage) and try to get a feel for the movements. Musical theatre is a pretty demanding track, requiring dance, voice, and acting skills. Good luck!
