Anorexia actually means a loss of appetite. Its not actually common in anorexia nervosa to have true anorexia as a symptom because people suffering from the disee do feel hunger (althou they may deny it). Anorexia Nervosa is a psychiatric illness where one of the diagnostic criteria is body weight of less than 85% expected. However...”

Sorry, just to add to that last post about anorexia, bmi of 17.5 is only one of the criteria…obviously many others come into consideration too, so yes it is true that you dont have to be drastically underweight to have a serious problem.

Correct! I also want to add that the diagnostics for anorexia nervosa has changed over the years. It used to be required to have amenorrhea to be diagnosed, which they have altered because some patients still had a period, or were too young to have it, etc. BMI isn’t the be-all, end-all.
